Book Of Eli, The: Review
Jan 19th
It has been 30 Winters since the flash, and the world is now one fucked up place to inhabit. Marauders and looters run rampant as the last of our kind try to salvage what is left of their lives. In comes Eli (Denzel Washington), a lone wanderer with a divine task to protect a mysterious book from the evils that pursue it. Now with the back story out of the way I can get into the ins and outs of the movie.
The Hughes brothers did an excellent job with the screenplay, camera angles, and the overall artistic feel of the movie. The whole Fallout/Post-Apocalyptic atmosphere felt authentic the whole time through. Ash falling from the sky, dust storms, and gritty locales were just a few spectacles of eye candy that littered the film.
The action scenes were frantic and surprisingly good. Denzel did one hell of a job in the “action hero” roll that he portrayed. He basically was a walking death machine, chopping and destroying everything in his path. Fight scenes were well choreographed, and the gun fights never seemed to be over the top. The action was never forced and the pacing between them worked out to it’s advantage.
Anybody with half of a brain could figure out that the book he was carrying was the Bible. In a sense, the back story of this film lies heavily on religion. The whole purpose is to deliver the last remaining Bible on the face of the planet to a place where it can be reproduced and given back to the people. Just take my word for it when I tell you that the story is good and actually worth paying attention to.
All in all, this is how you come into the new year, with a FUCKIN BANG!!! Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman did the damn thing and the Hughes Bros have an A+ project under their belts. I’m telling you to go see the movie, whether its with ya girl, friends, mother, grandmamma, whoever…just go see it.
